76th Schools Music Festival 2024: Minuet from L'arlèsienne by Bizet (N413 Primary School Senior)
This is a famous flute solo by French composer Bizet which also appears on orchestral audition occasionally. It is the third movement of the L'arlèsienne suite. Arlès is a city in southern France and with "-sienne" meaning "a girl from the city of Arlès". It was written for Alphonse Daudet's drama under the same name. (Arlès was also a city where the great painter Van Gough had stayed in!)
This is a piece that requires absolute control on the instrument i.e. smooth crossing between intervals, soft high notes, intonation, breath control, articulations, colours etc. and of course that is why it is asked in an orchestral audition.
